Liposuction

  • A cannula is moved around in the fat which is to be removed, the fat is broken up and then suctioned out
  • The surgeon first injects a large amount of fluid (a mixture of anesthetic and medicine to decrease bleeding, then
  • This can routinely performed without the need for general anesthesia
  • High energy sound waves (ultrasound) is used to break up the fat
  • Low pressure suction is then used to remove that fat
  • Best for the buttocks and back
  • Other advantages: may cause some tightening of the overlying skin
